Breathe in… Breathe out

Is it just me or have days been flying by at supersonic speed? Life can get crazy, am I right? We’re constantly hustling, bustling, and juggling a million things at once. Sometimes, all we really need is to hit the pause button and take a breather. So, if you’re feeling like you’re in need of a chill pill, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s talk about the importance of slowing down and giving yourself some much-needed relaxation time. You see, taking time to breathe is like hitting the reset button for your soul. It’s like a mini-vacation for your mind, body, and spirit. And hey, it doesn’t have to be a grand, expensive getaway to be effective. Here are five super chill suggestions for you to try:

  • Meditation and Mindfulness: Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let go of all those pesky worries. Meditation is like a spa day for your mind. It’s an excellent way to reduce stress and increase your focus.

  • Taking strolls: Be one with mother nature. Every once in a while take a leisurely walk, listen to the birds chirping, feel the breeze on your face, and reconnect with the world outside your smartphone. More often than not, a change in environment helps open up the mind and can help you find solutions that you had never considered.

  • Artistic expression: Whether you’re an artist or not, expressing yourself through art can be incredibly therapeutic. Grab some paints, markers, or colored pencils and let your creativity flow onto a canvas. No judgments, no critiques, just pure self-expression. How do I know this? A couple of weeks ago, my 3 ½ year old nephew asked me to paint with him. We did this for a good 20 minutes before he abandoned me to go off on his newest adventure. I was in the zone and painted away. The results… Picasso-level if do say so myself.

  • Pamper yourself: Treat yourself to a spa day, right at home! For me, it’s breaking away from the Arimis and glycerin skincare routine and trying something different as lockdown sessions play in the background. You deserve to feel like royalty, even if it’s just for an evening.

  • Reading Escape: Pick up a book you’ve been eyeing for a while and dive into a different world. The first 500-page book I ever read was Bloodline by Sydney Sheldon. We lived in Meru back then and there was a novel-library in the area. My sister selected the book and said she’d buy me cake if I read it cover to cover. When I was done I didn’t care much for the cake, I asked her to pay for my next one. Membership was about KSh. 200 and borrowing was KSh. 50 per book. Needless to say, I’ve never looked back. Whether you’re a fiction fan or self-help enthusiast, allow books to transport you to places you’ve never been.

Remember, taking time for yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. We all need a break from the whirlwind of life now and then, and these activities are your passport to tranquility. So, whether it’s a few moments of deep breathing or an entire spa day, make it a priority to relax, rejuvenate, and recharge. Your future self will thank you for it.
